On August 10th 2011, LTlov and the Lakeway Dental Office teamed up to bring a ground-breaking event to the greater Lake Travis area. Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Robbie Robinson and his staff, as well as an assembled team of local dentists, hygienists, Dental Assistants, LTlov members and Friends of LTlov, local children from lower income families were offered the opportunity to receive free dental care. Funding for the “Dental Care Day” project was the result of a grant requested by LTlov member Eileen Alter which was approved almost unanimously by the membership. A recent trip to the dentist formed the question, “What do families do who cannot afford basic dental care?” The answer and resulting effort was extraordinary! 64 LTISD children between the ages of 5 and 18 received the highest level of dental care including cleanings, x-rays, sealants, fillings, extractions, and even one minor root canal procedure. The dental event, staffed entirely of volunteers, was upbeat, fun and efficient. “Caring for 64 children with various needs in the space of 8 hours is an amazing feat!” voiced one volunteer at the end of the day. The smiles were contagious as kids walked out with brighter, healthier teeth and volunteers grinned ear to ear knowing the difference they helped to make! A special thank you to the Lake Travis Crisis Ministries, Spicewood Helping Hands, Emmaus parish, the Free Clinic, the Lake Travis Thrift Shop, and the Lake Travis Lunch Truck for marketing the event, to the Christian Compassion Center for the donation of toothbrushes and toothpastes, and to Benco Dental, Henry Schein Dental, Smart Practice, and GlaxoSmithKline for providing dental supplies. One parent’s parting words, “This meant more than you’ll ever know,” says it all.
